England vs Spain: Match Preview
England will begin their Nations League campaign against Spain just two months after their memorable run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Three Lions reached the semi-finals before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Argentina, but they responded strongly by beating France 6-4 in an entertaining third-place playoff.
Thomas Tuchel remains in charge of England despite criticism following the semi-final defeat. The German coach will now look to build on the World Cup experience as England begin another Nations League campaign.
England earned promotion back to League A after competing in League B during the 2024-25 edition. Their best Nations League finish came in the inaugural tournament in 2018-19, when they finished third.
The Three Lions have the historical advantage in their head-to-head record against Spain, winning 14 of their previous 28 meetings in all competitions, while Spain have recorded 11 victories.
However, Spain will enter this match with the psychological advantage of having beaten England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final. Saturday's meeting will therefore be their first encounter since that final.
Spain come into the contest as the reigning European and world champions. Luis de la Fuente guided La Roja to the 2026 World Cup title after a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final.
Spain also won the 2022-23 Nations League, defeating Croatia in the final, and finished runners-up in both 2020-21 and 2024-25. Their most recent final ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Portugal.
De la Fuente has extended his contract until at least 2032, while Spain have remained unbeaten in normal time since their friendly defeat to Colombia in March 2024. Their impressive consistency makes them one of the leading contenders for another Nations League title.
Team News
England will be without several important players for the upcoming international fixtures. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have all withdrawn from the squad because of injuries.
Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner have received late call-ups and could be involved. Lewis Hall is also a concern after missing training, leaving his availability uncertain.
Jarell Quansah could start at right-back ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Alex Scott may be considered in midfield following Rice's withdrawal.
Tuchel could opt for an attacking lineup featuring Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.
Spain will also have some absentees. Joan Garcia and Pedro Porro are unavailable because of injury, while Marcos Llorente has retired from international football.
Gavi and Borja Iglesias have not been selected, while Ivan Fresneda and Roberto Fernandez could make their international debuts.
Eric Garcia is a candidate to start at right-back, while Pedri's strong form for Barcelona could see him selected in midfield ahead of Fabian Ruiz.
Nico Williams has returned to full fitness and could start on the left side. Mikel Oyarzabal is also in contention to lead the attack, although Ferran Torres enters the international break in excellent form after scoring seven goals in his first six matches of the 2026-27 season for Paris Saint-Germain.
